Pilates is gaining the mastery of your mind over the complete control over your body - Joseph Pilates

Body-conditioning

Pilates is a mental and a physical body-conditioning programme developed by Joseph Pilates  (1883-1967) that works in a different way to other fitness techniques. Targeting deep postural muscles, Pilates exercises build strength from within to gently bring the body into correct alignment. It will improve your posture; produce a longer, leaner and more toned physique, achieving the perfect balance between strength and flexibility. It is also a great way to relieve tension and stress.

Poor muscle recruitment, which is likely when muscles are not at their correct length can cause tension or pain.

Improving mobility

There's really no such thing as 'bad posture'.  Problems arise from staying in the same position for too long and performing repetitive actions with imperfect movement which can lead to a muscle imbalance which can cause joint wear which can lead to pain.  In addition to this a sedentary lifestyle, stress, illness and existing injuries can all lead to faulty movement patterns which can often feel normal.  Pain is often the first sign of a problem although not always.

Pilates is a safe and effective form of exercise that if performed regularly, re-establishes correct muscle recruitment, which restores good posture and strength.  It targets the deep postural muscles that support you rather than the dominant dynamic muscles that move you.

Concentration and body awareness

Come to class prepared to listen to YOUR body.  You will learn where your mind and muscles are lazy and how your body will try to cheat to try to achieve a particular movement – to enable you to change the bad habits you need to be aware of what they are.  If you want to change things you need to concentrate on how your body moves, making each movement with complete awareness and focus.  Come to class to discover easier and healthier patterns of movement, developing good habits to develop in your body which will benefit you throughout the day and hone a body that will last a lifetime. Pilates will give you such a wonderful sense of well-being, you’ll want to do it for the rest of your life.

Pilates really is for every body.
